Market statistics shows that participants assessed the probability of a political change at just 6.5% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.

Legal Questions Emerges

Some lawmakers are growing concerned.

Proposed legislation presented on Monday aims to prohibit government employees from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

Market Background

Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in the United States, with users able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to political events.

The industry faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. However it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Insider trading is illegal in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the forecasting arena.

A company executive for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
