The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
